This is what usually happens: we are killing our nutrition and fitness goals, and then we do something stupid like play soccer without our shoes on, with much faster college kids and sprain our calf. (this probably DIDn't happen to my husband). And then we feel like we have to stop EVERY thing until it heals. We relax on our eating, because we get in this mindset: "if I ain't working out, who cares if I eat 3 donuts today...I am already going to have to start ALL over anyways!"
And before we know it we are back to our old bad habits, and we have to START all over again after we heal. This can really kill our motivation.
These last couple of weeks I have had friends and Team Khoppers who have injured themselves, maybe, doing some of the above scenarios. But just because their leg is hurt, or just because their wrist hurts doesn't mean they can't keep their motivation and keep on track to healthy and whole.
Here are some simple tips to keep your momentum when you have the injury BLUES...
1. See a professional. If you have a nagging injury or something you just can't shake, see someone who can help. I have had a nagging wrist issue for 6 months. I FINALLY went to a chiropractor that specializes in the exercise I do, he is awesome, and he has given me exercises and stretches to open other areas of my body to heal my wrist. It has changed everything. Get the adequate care you need so you don't keep hurting yourself.
2. Keep your NUTRITION in check. Nutrition is key, especially during the time you aren't burning the calories your body is used to. Use your motivation to really dial in that nutrition. This is something you can CONTROL, while you are sitting the bench... Here is a video on how to track and have goals for your nutrition.
3. Workout the body parts that are good to go.
Just because your leg is hurt doesn't mean you can't work your arms or core and still get a sweat in. Be creative with what you can do. It might not be the exact thing you love, but it's something, and a little something can do wonders. This will also help you mentally to adapt and overcome many things that are thrown in your way. Here is an arm workout you can do if your leg is hurt.
Now go get after it, my little gimpers...
